How to Pick an ATV Bag
There are a lot of ATV Bags on the market. In this article we’ll explain how to pick an ATV bag and also give a review of some of the best ATV bags available. You can also surprise your dads with our awesome gift list for Father’s Day.
What to Look For
Let’s begin by taking a look at what you need to look for in a bag.
Hard or Soft Shell?
ATV bags come in two main varieties: hard and soft shells. Hard shells are normally made of plastic whereas the soft shell ones are normally made of some type of fabric (the fabric type we’ll get into later).
Hard shell ‘bags’ are normally the most durable and they are also normally water-proof as well. However, they’re heavy, bulky, and a lot of people complain they’re not as comfortable. They’re also a lot more expensive. For the comfort and price, most people go with a soft shell bags.Â
Where is it being mounted?
Quad bags can be mounted in basically one of a few locations:
- Rear Bags
- Front Bags
- Saddle Bags
- Fender Bags
- Map Bags
For larger items, like tools, recovery, gear, and so on a rear bag is the most popular. Front ATV bags are nearly identical to rear bags except that they are mounted on the front of the ATV.
Fender bags and saddle bags are ideal for smaller items like small electronics, small food items, etc.
Zippers or No Zippers?
If you can find a bag without zippers, this is ideal. Zippers tend to be the weakest link on bags as over time they are prone to breaking.
The best bags use buckles and/or magnets to secure the bags shut, ideally with some type of dust guard. If you do buy a bag with zippers, make sure they have a dust guard over the zippers as well (a piece of fabric that goes over the zippers).
How Does it Attach?
Most hard bags attach with simple u-bolts that attach to the rack of your ATV. If your ATV does not have a rear rack then mounting the bag can be slightly more difficult.
Most soft bags attach with a number of of buckles that hook under your rear rack or other mounting position.
Brands
There are several major brands on the market. Along with the major brands there are also a number of private label brands on Amazon. The private label brands are often much cheaper than larger brands and they may even rival the quality. Warranty and service issues are the main concern – just because a private label brand offers a 10 year warranty, it doesn’t mean they’ll be around in 10 years to honor it. With a well recognized brand the company is more likely to stand behind their warranty.
