The Differences Between DOT, SNELL and ECE

helmet safety ratings

When shopping for ATV helmets, you’ll usually come across stickers found at the back of the ATV helmets. These are the DOT, SNELL and ECE which are all known as a helmet safety rating system. The truth is, all three have one ultimate goal – testing the ATV helmet’s capacity to withstand impact. However, each system follows a unique testing standard according to its safety policies.

  • Department of Transportation (DOT) – It started in 1974 and is still being updated until now to ensure it follows the safety standards regardless of the changing time and needs. In fact, it’s the mandatory US government standard that all helmets must pass, in order to be used on highways. However, it’s primarily trust-based which means ATV helmets’ manufacturers perform a series of strength tests but won’t provide the government with an official documentation about it.
  • SNELL Memorial Foundation (SNELL) – Unlike the DOT, it’s a standard that manufacturers apply for and acquire, should their helmets meet its safety criteria. Although both DOT and SNELL have an almost similar way of testing their ATV helmets, the latter’s approval is harder than the former because undergo a more severe impact testing. Plus, even if a certain ATV helmet brand has managed to get a SNELL approval before and decides to release new ATV helmets, SNELL buys the new ATV helmets and personally inspects them to check if they still meet the standards.
  • United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) – This one is the mandatory European government standard which happens to be a counterpart of the DOT. But instead of being trust-based, it requires an ATV helmet batch testing for it to get a firsthand experience of whether or not the ATV helmets meet the safety needs. The difference between SNELL and ECE is the former argues the thicker the ATV helmet foam is, the more protection it gives but the latter tells otherwise.

Remember, even if the three helmet rating systems have their own ways of determining how safe an ATV helmet can be, one thing is certain. An ATV helmet is an effective precautionary tool for reducing death risks and other forms of fatality.
